A bride fulfilled her late grandmother’s wish to be at her wedding by surprising her with an emotional dress reveal

Tara Foley was always fascinated by the life of her late grandmother, Stasia, who lived to be almost 103 years old.

This past January, when Foley was a bride-to-be preparing for her June wedding, she learned that her grandmother was in hospice care and unable to travel to attend the wedding.

“She told a nurse that her goal was to attend my wedding, even though she wasn’t allowed or able to get on a plane,” Foley told Insider. “I knew she wanted so badly to be there, and I wanted her to be there.”

So Foley planned a surprise trip to visit her grandmother, in which she would wear her wedding dress and have a photoshoot.

With her unaltered white gown in tow, Foley flew from her home in Austin, Texas, to her grandmother’s care facility in Florida. Foley arranged a photographer to capture the surprise.

“We knew what [Tara] was going to do, but to see it in person was really special,” said Marie Kamp of Red Door Photography, who was behind the lens that day.

When Tara Foley’s grandma, Stasia, was put in hospice care in Naples, Florida, last winter, the head nurse asked the 102-year-old if she had any goals for the next few months.

She had one biggie on her list: To make it to Foley’s wedding in Austin, Texas, come June.

It was a lovely thought, but unlikely to happen: Given her advanced age and ongoing heart problems, doctors didn’t want Stasia flying anymore.

Foley knew in her heart that her grandma was still gung-ho on going, and probably holding on in the hopes that they’d make it happen somehow.

“My nana was always an extremely independent woman who did nearly everything on her own, but when her heart started to fail, she started to slow down,” Foley told HuffPost.

If Stasia couldn’t make it to the wedding, Foley was determined to give her the next best thing: Without anyone in her family knowing, the bride-to-be grabbed her unaltered wedding gown and flew from her home in Austin, Texas, to her grandmother in Florida.

She tapped local photographer Marie Kamp of Red Door Photography to take photos of the January 2019 visit, which was a total surprise for her grandma.

Bride surprises grandmother who couldn’t fly to wedding with a special photo shoot

Bring on the tissues!

As a child, Tara Foley always had a special relationship with her grandmother. And as she grew into adulthood, the 37-year-old came to appreciate the matriarch of her family even more.

So when she got engaged, the realtor knew her nana, Stasia Foley, simply had to be at the wedding. “When she was visiting us in Texas last September, she talked about looking forward to my wedding and how she hoped she would be there,” Foley told TODAY Style via email.

But at 102 years old, Stasia Foley’s health was beginning to decline. Just weeks after her granddaughter found the perfect wedding dress, Foley began receiving hospice care in her Naples, Florida, residence.

“One of the nurses asked her what her goals were and she told them she wanted to be at my wedding, which was still six months away,” Tara Foley said.

On Jan. 28, Foley set out on a trip that only her fiance, Matt Bars, knew about. She flew to Florida to surprise her grandmother with a special photo shoot. “I wanted to make sure I could give Nana her wish, or come as close to it as I possibly could. It was her only goal. I also wanted to give her a sense of peace that it was okay if she couldn’t keep holding on,” she said.

The bride-to-be got her makeup and hair done beforehand and changed into her Stella York wedding dress after greeting the 102-year-old at the door. Her grandmother’s reaction was priceless.
